Teatro de la Zarzuela, Opera theatre in central Madrid, Spain
Teatro de la Zarzuela is a theatre building in central Madrid featuring classical Italian-style architecture with a horseshoe-shaped auditorium arranged across multiple levels. The design provides good sightlines from the various seating sections.
The building was completed in 1856 following designs by architect Jerónimo de la Gándara and underwent major reconstruction following a fire in 1909. It reopened in 1914.
This venue is Spain's main stage for zarzuela, a traditional musical form mixing spoken dialogue with song that continues to be performed here regularly. Visitors experience a living tradition that has been central to Spanish artistic life for generations.
The theatre is located near Sevilla metro station and is easily accessible by public transport. Visitors should check in advance for performance schedules and when tours are available.
The architecture incorporates elements modeled after Milan's La Scala, with specific design features that enhance acoustics throughout the hall. These deliberate structural choices make the space particularly suited for musical performances.
