Palacio de Buenavista, Military palace at Plaza de Cibeles, Madrid, Spain
Palacio de Buenavista is a palace in Madrid near Plaza de Cibeles that now serves as the headquarters of the Spanish Army. The building displays a symmetrical façade with Italian and French design elements, along with an interior courtyard and adjoining gardens.
Architect Juan Pedro Arnal designed the palace in 1777 for the thirteenth Duchess of Alba as a residence. In 1847 the Ministry of War took over the building, which has served military purposes ever since.
The name "Buenavista" means "good view" and originally referred to its elevated position overlooking the city. Today the façade displays military emblems and coats of arms that mark its role as the Army headquarters.
The palace serves as the Army headquarters and can only be visited during guided tours on Wednesday mornings after booking by email in advance. Its military function means restricted access and security checks at the entrance.
On the last Friday of each month a military changing of the guard takes place at the entrance. The ceremony follows traditional protocol with uniforms and marching music.
