Castle of Anguix

Castle of Anguix is a medieval fortress built on a rocky hilltop with a five-sided layout and thick stone walls reinforced by corner towers. The structure commands views over the Tajo River valley and agricultural plains that stretch to the horizon.

The fortress was founded in 1136 when knight Martin Ordonez built a stronghold under orders from King Alfonso VII to support regional growth. It became part of the defensive network that protected the territory during the medieval period.

The structure represents the architectural evolution of Spanish military fortifications, featuring a pentagonal layout with 6-meter-high walls and corner towers.

Access involves traveling on unpaved roads through farmland, followed by a steep climb to the castle entrance at the summit. Wear sturdy shoes and allow extra time for the uphill walk, especially if you want to explore the interior fully.

A spiral staircase in the interior leads down to an underground chamber that once stored water and served as a prison cell. This hidden space reveals how medieval fortresses had to serve multiple purposes with limited resources.
