Butrón, Gothic Revival castle in Gatika, Spain.
Butrón is a Gothic Revival castle in Gatika set within grounds planted with palms and exotic species amid the Basque countryside. Four circular towers mark the corners and give the structure a storybook silhouette.
In the 11th century a fortified tower rose here and laid the foundation for later expansions. In 1878 the architect Francisco de Cubas transformed the structure into a castle in the style of Bavarian Gothic Revival.
The name comes from the noble Butrón family who made this their seat for centuries. Today the castle with its romantic style feels more like a backdrop from a fairy tale than a Basque monument.
The grounds lie about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from Bilbao and remain open to walk around. The interior of the castle itself cannot be visited.
The architect took inspiration from castles in Bavaria and created an unusual mix of Gothic and Germanic elements. This choice gives the structure a romantic tone rarely seen in the region.
