The salt production facilities established in the late 19th century transformed the original Albufera de Elche wetland system into the current landscape.
The Salt Museum in Santa Pola presents exhibitions about the traditional salt production methods and the environmental significance of these wetlands.
Visitors can access the park through marked trails with observation points, while the interpretation center provides detailed information about local wildlife.
The park hosts up to 8,000 flamingos and contains specific plant species like Limonium santapolense that adapt to high salt concentrations.
