Castle of Grajal de Campos, Renaissance castle near León, Spain
Castle of Grajal de Campos is a Renaissance fortress with four round corner towers and a square layout, located near León in Spain. The structure displays well-planned 16th-century military design with thick walls and strategically positioned watchtowers.
Construction began in the early 1500s under Hernando de Vega, built atop foundations from a 10th-century structure. His son Juan de Vega y Acuña completed the work, transforming it into a residential seat for an influential noble family.
The fortress served as the family seat of a powerful lineage and continues to define the village's character. Walking around it, you notice how the structure expresses the authority and status that its owners held.
The fortress is visible from the village and offers visitors a clear view from ground level. The surroundings allow you to explore the structure from outside and study its architecture from various angles.
An underground passage connects the fortress with a Renaissance palace located in the village, linking the military structure to residential quarters. This hidden tunnel allowed the family to move between their two main buildings without being exposed to the outside.
