Castle of Malamoneda

Castle of Malamoneda is a medieval stone fortress in Hontanar with wall remains and structural elements showing military building methods from that era. Beside the main ruins stands a rectangular tower known as the Tower of Malamoneda, which formed part of the same defensive network.

The fortress was repeatedly modified by different groups, starting from Visigothic settlements, then under Muslim rule, and later during the Christian reconquest of the region. This changing history shows how contested this strategic location was over many centuries.

The ruins reveal how people lived and defended themselves here, shaping how settlements developed across this mountain region. Artifacts found at the site tell stories about daily routines and the community that once occupied this place.

The ruins can be reached via local roads from Hontanar and remain accessible year-round as municipal property. It is best to visit in early morning or late afternoon when fewer people are around.

The remains are part of a broader defensive network that once controlled movement and trade across the entire mountain region. This system of interconnected fortifications was far more sophisticated than the scattered ruins suggest today.
