Castle of Montánchez

Castle of Montánchez, Medieval castle in Montánchez, Spain.

The Castle of Montanchez sits on a hilltop and features stone walls, towers, and three water cisterns from its original construction. The structure displays the foundational layout from its Islamic period combined with later Christian reinforcements.

The fortress was founded during the Caliphate period and received additional fortifications in the 12th century under the Almohads. These two phases shaped the building as it appears today.

The fortress shows layers of Islamic and Christian building styles, since it was reshaped after the Order of Santiago took control. Visitors can see this blend of different eras directly in the walls and towers.

You can explore the structure by following marked paths through the archaeological remains on your own. It makes sense to wear sturdy shoes and allow time for a leisurely climb to the hilltop.

In the early 1600s the fortress briefly held Don Rodrigo Calderon, a high-ranking Spanish political figure, as a prisoner. His banishment to this remote location marked a dramatic shift in his career.
