Osma Castle, Medieval fortress in El Burgo de Osma, Spain
Osma Castle is a medieval fortress in El Burgo de Osma situated on a hilltop between two rivers. The structure comprises three walled enclosures built in descending levels, with surviving portions including walls, towers, and various building sections.
The fortress was founded in 912 and served as a contested stronghold during centuries of conflict between Christian and Muslim forces. King Alfonso VI secured permanent Christian control over the site when he captured it in 1088.
The fortress incorporates stone and building material salvaged from the Roman settlement of Uxama that once occupied this location. Visitors can observe this layering of periods when walking through the defensive walls and examining the foundations.
The site is open to visitors from Wednesday to Sunday with access to the hilltop offering views across the surrounding countryside. Sturdy footwear is recommended as paths are uneven and some areas require careful navigation.
The Water Tower at the base of the hill stands as the sole remaining structure from the third and lowest defensive enclosure. This isolated building reveals how the fortress managed water access and defended its most vulnerable outer positions.
