Castillo de San Esteban de Gormaz

Castillo de San Esteban de Gormaz is a medieval fortress positioned on a hilltop with commanding views of the Douro River below. The structure has an elongated, narrow layout and preserves walls, interior chambers, and underground water systems that reveal how it functioned over centuries.

The fortress was founded around 956 AD under Muslim rule and subsequently changed hands multiple times as Christian and Muslim forces competed for control. These shifts in power shaped how the building was constructed and modified throughout its existence.
