Castle of Soto

Castillo de Soto de Aller is a medieval fortification in Asturias featuring cylindrical towers and robust defensive walls built in late Gothic style. The structure combines military design with residential spaces, showing how castle architecture served both protection and noble living.

Built in the 12th century, this fortress was extensively rebuilt during the 14th century to meet the needs of local nobility for stronger defense and better living quarters. The modifications reflect how castle design evolved to balance military strategy with residential comfort over several centuries.

The site received substantial restoration work between April and August 2022 to stabilize its remaining structures for long-term preservation. Wear sturdy shoes when exploring, as the terrain and partially restored areas require careful footing.

Urraca of Asturias, an illegitimate daughter of King Alfonso VII, lived within these walls before marrying the King of Pamplona. This connection reveals how this castle was tied to major royal political alliances and dynastic marriages of the medieval period.
