Chapel of Santa Tecla, Burgos Cathedral, Baroque chapel in Cathedral, Burgos, Spain
The Chapel of Santa Tecla is a Baroque structure within Burgos Cathedral featuring polychrome plasterwork decorations across its vaults and semi-spherical dome. Medallions, busts, and angel figures adorn the interior surfaces, creating an ornately decorated space.
Built between 1731 and 1736, the chapel consolidated four medieval chapels dedicated to Saints Praxedes, Victoria, All Saints, and Lucy. This merger created a unified space that reflected changing needs within the cathedral over centuries.
The main altar displays golden columns and polychrome sculptures showing the martyrdom of Saint Tecla. Visitors can witness these religious artworks that continue to serve as focal points for prayer and devotion within the cathedral.
The chapel remains open during regular cathedral hours and continues to host religious services. Visitors should be aware that access may be limited during active worship times.
The chapel houses the most recent organ installation in Burgos Cathedral, added in 2004. It also preserves a 15th-century sculpture of the Virgin of Oca, an artwork that often escapes visitor attention.
