Cabo Vidio, Cape and peninsula in Oviñana, Spain
Cabo Vidio is a rocky headland on the Asturian coast of northern Spain, where a plateau of quartzite and slate rises steeply from the sea. A lighthouse stands on top of this rocky shelf and looks out over long stretches of the Cantabrian shoreline in both directions.
This headland jutting into the Cantabrian Sea was a hazard for ships for centuries due to its position, fog, and strong currents. The lighthouse was built in 1950 after many wrecks in these waters made a permanent signal necessary.
Local fishermen have long used this headland as a reference point for reading currents and weather along the coast. The rocky coves below the plateau still attract anglers who know how to navigate the rough shoreline.
A circular trail links the nearby village of Ovinana to the headland and can be walked in around three hours in good conditions. Sturdy footwear matters because parts of the path are rocky and some slopes are steep.
Below the lighthouse lies a natural sea cave called La Iglesiona, whose arched stone ceiling resembles a small church nave. Sailors once used this chamber to amplify sound signals during dense fog.
