Pico Urbión is a mountain peak in the Sistema Ibérico range rising to 2228 meters, marking the highest point between La Rioja and Soria Province. Its slopes are composed of slate and frequently hold snow, while several mountain lakes rest on its flanks.
The peak was shaped during periods of intense glacial activity that determined its slate composition and the formation of several lakes across the area. These ice age processes left a lasting mark on the landscape and terrain we see today.
The mountain sits at the source of the Duero River, one of Spain's most important waterways that shapes agriculture and daily life across the surrounding regions. Local communities have long used this area as both a natural resource and a landmark that anchors their connection to the land.
The peak can be climbed from several starting points including Duruelo de la Sierra and Abejar, with multiple routes of varying difficulty to choose from. Snow coverage from October through May can affect conditions and make the ascent more demanding.
The peak functions as a natural dividing line between the Ebro and Duero river basins, creating completely different ecosystems on each side. This divide is visible from above and shapes the plant and animal life on a massive scale.
