Pantano de Linares, Stausee in Spanien
Pantano de Linares is a reservoir in Segovia Province near the village of Maderuelo, created by a concrete dam built in the early 1950s. The water fills a wide valley between forested hills of the Sierra de Ayllón and serves multiple purposes including power generation and irrigation for local farms.
The reservoir was built in the early 1950s to regulate the Riaza and Aguisejo rivers and provide water for power generation and farming. Construction flooded the village of Linares, and its residents were relocated to a nearby settlement called La Vid, where new homes were constructed for them.
The name Pantano de Linares comes from the village that now lies submerged beneath the water. Visitors who explore here connect with a place where human settlement and engineering have permanently altered the landscape and local identity.
When water levels are low, visitors can see ruins of the old church of San Juan Bautista, including its bell tower. It is helpful to check water conditions beforehand, as accessibility and outdoor activities vary depending on the season and local weather patterns.
Hidden beneath the water lies the bell tower of the vanished church of Linares, which emerges from the lake when water levels drop. This visible link to the submerged settlement makes the reservoir a place where visitors can discover the tangible trace of a forgotten past.
