Segovia Province, Province in central Spain, Castile and León
Segovia is a province in central Spain located in southern Castile and León, featuring a diverse landscape of mountain ranges, pine forests, and agricultural plains. The terrain is shaped by the Sistema Central mountain chain, with valleys and open countryside interspersed throughout the area.
The province took its current administrative boundaries in 1833 during Spain's major territorial reorganization into 49 provinces. This reorganization established the territory as it exists today.
Medieval fortifications like those in Coca and Cuéllar shape the landscape and reflect different architectural periods throughout the province. These castles remain visible reminders of the aristocratic past that defined the region for centuries.
Access to Madrid is through mountain passes in the Sistema Central, with the AP-61 motorway serving as the main route. Mountain terrain means travel times between locations may take longer than in flatter areas.
The Royal Glass Factory at La Granja was founded in 1727 and produced glass items for Spanish royal palaces. This manufactory left a lasting impact on European decorative craftsmanship and artistic traditions.
