Artillery Park is a rectangular complex with thick stone walls, large courtyards, and symmetrical Neoclassical buildings arranged around open spaces. The structures served practical purposes: storing weapons and carrying out repairs and maintenance work.
The complex was designed and built by architect Mateo Vodopich between 1777 and 1786, when Spain strengthened its coastal defenses. It was created during a period when Cartagena served as a key military port that needed protection from potential threats.
The facility was built as a living and working space for soldiers and craftsmen who maintained weapons here daily. Its design reveals how the military organized its workforce and the practical activities that filled each day within these walls.
The facility sits on Plaza de las Puertas de la Serreta in central Cartagena and is easily reached on foot from the harbor area. Expect uneven ground and narrow streets surrounding the complex as you walk around to view the exterior.
