The basilica emerged from a humble beginning in 1693 when galley soldier Francisco García Roldán established a congregation for caring for the sick.
The main altar houses the patron saint of Cartagena, represented by an 18th-century Neapolitan image of the Virgin of Charity brought in 1723.
The basilica maintains regular mass schedules and welcomes visitors to explore its interior, which includes numerous religious artworks and sculptures.
Naval engineer Tomás de Tallerie designed this religious building, incorporating maritime architectural influences into its neoclassical structure.
