Iglesia de San Lorenzo el Real

Iglesia de San Lorenzo el Real is a baroque church built with a Greek cross floor plan that features an octagonal center. Four large columns rise to support the dome, which is illuminated from above by a lantern opening.

Construction took place between 1684 and 1694 under the direction of architects Bernabé de Hazas and Francisco del Pontón. The new structure replaced an earlier, smaller church that had occupied the same location.

The Brotherhood of Coronación de Espinas y de Cristo Rey calls this place home and has participated in Easter processions since 1945. Members actively shape the religious life of the city through their annual celebrations held here.

The church is located on Calle Almirante Bonifaz, close to Plaza Mayor and Paseo del Espolón, in a busy area with shops and cafes. Its central position makes it easy to visit alongside other historic sites in the old town.

The tower stands out as a distinctive architectural feature designed as a rectangular prism wider than it is tall, topped with a bell gable. This unusual shape makes it a recognizable element that extends beyond the main facade.
