The Church of San Marcelo displays a Latin cross layout with a Gothic tympanum and houses multiple altarpieces featuring sculptures by Gregorio Fernández.
Master builders Juan del Ribero Rada and Baltasar Gutiérrez designed the current structure in 1588, completing the construction by 1627 in Herrera architectural style.
The church preserves the remains of Saint Marcellus, a Roman centurion martyred in Tangiers, brought to León by King Ferdinand in 1493.
The church maintains regular worship services and welcomes visitors to explore its architectural elements, religious artifacts, and silver chests collection.
The main chapel contains an 18th-century altarpiece with a central sculpture of Saint Marcellus created by Gregorio Fernández in the early 17th century.
