Church of San Martín, Plasencia

The Church of San Martín is a Romanesque building in Plasencia with three naves and an intricate wooden ceiling featuring hexagonal patterns throughout. The structural arrangement creates a rhythmic interior with varying heights and visual lines that guide the eye.

The building dates from the 13th century with parts of the original structure still visible in the southern wall and northern portal. The inscription on the north side marking 'Era MCCXXVIII' documents this early construction phase.

The church houses a notable 16th-century altarpiece by Luis de Morales depicting scenes from Jesus's childhood and Saint Martin sharing his cloak with the poor. These religious images remain central to the interior and tell spiritual stories through art.

The building is located very close to the Plaza Mayor and is therefore easy to reach and find. Visitors should check opening times beforehand and wear appropriate clothing as it is a place of worship.

Inside the building there is a Talavera tile on one of the columns marking where the alms collector of the souls brotherhood once stood. This small detail reveals the religious and social practices of earlier times.
