Church of Santa María, Miranda de Ebro

Church of Santa María, Miranda de Ebro, Renaissance church in Miranda de Ebro, Spain

The Church of Santa María is a Renaissance building in Miranda de Ebro with three naves supported by sixteen columns in a classical layout. The interior features elaborate decoration, most notably in its main altar and choir areas.

The current building was constructed between 1523 and 1571 as a replacement for an earlier Romanesque church from the 12th century. This shift from Romanesque to Renaissance style reflects how architectural tastes changed in the region over time.

The main altar features a statue of the Virgin of Altamira in the Churrigueresque style that became popular during the 18th century. This ornate baroque form of religious art shaped how Spanish churches looked and how people experienced worship in them.

The building is easily accessible through Miranda de Ebro's street network and functions as an active parish church. Visitors should know that opening hours may vary and it is helpful to check local times before visiting.

The choir area has preserved the mummified remains of a canon since 1812 and holds religious carvings from the 17th and 18th centuries. This collection makes the choir area function like a museum of the local church's past centuries.
