Cruz de Motrico

Cruz de Motrico is a mountain summit within the Obarenes range, rising to about 850 meters above sea level. A large metal cross marks the top, making it easy to spot when you reach the peak.

A metal cross was placed at the summit in 1955 and has remained there as a landmark for the surrounding area. Local mountaineers have maintained it over the decades.

The summit holds meaning for local mountaineers as a gathering point throughout the year. The nighttime climbs that happen annually bring people together and reinforce a shared passion for mountain pursuits in the community.

Two main trails lead to the summit, one from the north at San Juan del Monte and another from the south at Villalba de Rioja, both going through forest paths. Wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water, as the climb demands steady effort.

A mailbox sits at the cross where hikers leave written messages and thoughts to share with other visitors. This simple tradition has become a meaningful ritual that adds a personal touch to the climb.
