Church of Santa María, Siones

The Church of Santa María is a Romanesque place of worship in Valle de Mena with a central nave, a rounded apse, and two side chapels. The building has entrances on its western and southern sides that lead into the interior spaces.

The building was constructed during the 12th century and has retained Romanesque architectural features since its creation. In the 19th century it underwent some modifications, but it received national monument status in 1931.

The chapels inside display elaborate carvings of biblical scenes like Adam and Eve or Santa Juliana fighting a demon. These images show how medieval believers saw and understood religious stories in their daily worship.

Access is possible through the western or southern facade depending on which direction you approach from. Visitors should allow time to examine the interior details carefully, as the carvings and carved capitals show fine craftsmanship.

The northern chapel features a rare carved capital showing two knights locked in combat with exceptional stone craftsmanship. This scene stands out as an unusual depiction of medieval fighting techniques preserved in carved stone.
