The Church of Santa María la Nueva features a semi-cylindrical apse decorated with seven arches supported by slender columns along its structure.
During the Mutiny of the Trout in 1158, local citizens set fire to the church while nobles were inside deciding punishments after a market dispute.
The church displays a significant baptismal font from the 12th century with carved biblical motifs depicting Christ's baptism and images of apostles.
Visitors can explore the Holy Week Museum adjacent to the church and observe the bronze Barandales statue used in religious processions.
The church walls contain murals discovered in 1959, representing one of the oldest sets in the province with characteristics of Gothic naturalism.
