Church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen, Málaga, Baroque church in El Perchel, Spain
The Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel stands in the El Perchel neighborhood as a Baroque structure with three naves divided by rounded arches and flanked by two bell towers. Its Mannerist facade reflects the architectural style that characterized Carmelite religious buildings of its era.
The church was established in 1584 as part of the San Andrés monastery and underwent major reconstruction following the 1680 earthquake. The Spanish Civil War left its mark on the building, though restoration work has since addressed these damages.
The Brotherhood of Mercy maintains its spiritual life within these walls and carries religious sculptures through the streets during Holy Week processions. Visitors can witness how the community gathers to observe these centuries-old devotional traditions.
The interior is open to visitors during daytime hours, though you should be respectful during masses and prayer sessions. Visiting in the morning before services begin offers a quieter experience for exploring the interior.
The main altar holds a statue of the Virgin of Carmen created by sculptor José Navas Parejo in 1945, dressed in an extensive collection of embroidered garments. These robes are changed for special occasions, giving the statue a different appearance throughout the year.
