Playa de La Franca, Coastal beach in Ribadedeva, Spain.
Playa de La Franca is a sandy beach in the municipality of Ribadedeva, on the eastern coast of Asturias, where the Cabra River meets the Cantabrian Sea. The shore has showers, restrooms, and a nearby parking area, making it one of the more equipped beaches along this stretch of coast.
In the 19th century, a seaside spa was built near the shore, drawing visitors from across the region and turning this spot into one of the first coastal retreats in eastern Asturias. Over time, the beach became a regular summer destination for families from nearby towns and villages.
The name La Franca likely refers to the old road that once passed nearby, the Camino Real, which connected this stretch of the Asturian coast to the rest of the region. Today, the beach sits at a point where the Cantabrian Sea meets the mouth of a small river, creating a mix of salt and fresh water that gives the shore a particular character.
The beach has ramps and accessible restrooms and showers, so it works well for visitors with mobility needs. Parking is available nearby, though arriving early in the day is a good idea during summer months.
When the tide goes out, three small coves named El Oso, El Viveru, and Regorgueru appear along the shore, completely hidden at high tide. Most visitors never see them, since reaching them requires watching the tidal cycle carefully.
