Church of Nuestra Señora de las Angustias or Alpajés, Aranjuez, Baroque church in Aranjuez, Spain.
The Church of Nuestra Señora de las Angustias is a Baroque building with exposed brick and white stone details, featuring a Latin-cross plan and a modest transept. The interior is arranged functionally with clear lines and a focused altar area, reflecting the classical influence of its time.
The building was constructed on the site of an earlier 1681 structure under architects Cristóbal Rodríguez de Jarama and Santiago Bonavía. Its construction took place during a period of intensive building activity in Aranjuez, when the city was an important royal residence.
The main facade displays the coat of arms of Charles II and the emblem of the Order of the Golden Fleece, marking the royal connections of this place. These symbols reflect how important the church was to the Habsburg dynasty.
The church is located on Calle del Príncipe, near the Prince's Garden, making it easy to reach on foot. Regular Masses are held, but visitors should check opening times before visiting.
The design was directly inspired by Rome's Il Gesù church, incorporating elements of the Madrid school of classicism. This connection to Italian models gives the place an unexpected international character.
