Monestir del Sant Sepulcre d'Alcoi, église espagnole
The Monestir del Sant Sepulcre d'Alcoi is a monastery with a baroque church that stands in the town of Alcoy. The building has a cross-shaped plan with an oval dome over the central space, side chapels separated by thick arches, and small windows that allow light to fill the interior.
The monastery was founded in 1595 when Patriarch Juan de Ribiera laid its cornerstone. In 1925, the side facade was renovated in regional baroque style by architect Vicente Valls Gadea, and it remains active today under the care of Carmelite nuns.
The monastery holds memories of a local miracle that has connected the community for centuries. Residents regard this place as an expression of their faith and ongoing bond with religious traditions that remain alive in the town today.
The building is located on C/ Sant Blai street and is easy to find; it welcomes visits, tours, and cultural events. Visitors should note that thick walls and a quiet setting shape the experience, especially in the peaceful corridors and gardens surrounding the monastery.
Inside, an oval chapel holds a copy of the Holy Shroud and a statue of the Prague Child Jesus, which according to legend pointed to where a hidden chalice lay buried. The same chapel contains a small wooden figure of Saint Joseph with a miniature carpentry bench complete with tiny wood shavings.
