Mercado de Abastos de Zamora, Indoor marketplace in Plaza del Mercado, Zamora, Spain.
Mercado de Abastos de Zamora is an indoor marketplace built with iron framework and red brick, designed across two levels with large curved windows letting in natural light. The upper floor holds food vendors while the basement provides storage space for merchants.
Built in 1902 to designs by architect Segundo Viloria Escarda, it replaced a trading ground that had existed since the 16th century. The iron and brick construction reflected new building techniques of that era for public market spaces.
The market serves as a meeting point where producers from the province sell directly to locals, keeping alive the tradition of trading regional goods from Zamora. This daily exchange between countryside and city shapes the atmosphere inside the building.
Covered canopies around the building's perimeter allow local farmers to display and sell fresh produce directly to shoppers. Visiting in the morning provides the best experience with full vendor selection and activity.
The building displays early industrial architecture with curved window design that creates a distinctive visual character. These design features were unusual for market buildings of its time and give it architectural interest.
