Mercado de San Antón, Food marketplace in Chueca district, Madrid, Spain.
Mercado de San Antón is a three-story market building in the Chueca neighborhood of Madrid, housing food vendors, bars, restaurants, and a rooftop terrace. The ground floor is dedicated to fresh produce and specialty stalls, while the upper levels step up through tapas bars and sit-down restaurants to an open-air terrace at the top.
A street market operated on this site in the 19th century and was eventually replaced by a permanent building in 1945. That structure was later demolished and a new building opened in 2011, combining shopping and dining under one roof.
San Antón sits in the heart of Chueca, a neighborhood known for its open and social street life, and the market fits naturally into that rhythm. By evening, the upper floors fill with groups sharing food and drinks in a setting that feels more like a gathering than a shopping trip.
The building is a short walk from the Chueca metro station and all floors are connected by both stairs and elevators. It is worth visiting at different times of day, as the ground floor is busiest in the morning while the upper levels pick up toward evening.
The rooftop skylight runs on solar energy and the floors are made from recycled basalt, which is an uncommon material choice for a market building. The whole structure was also designed from the start to reduce the amount of organic waste produced each day.
