UGT headquarters, Madrid, Labor union headquarters in Justicia district, Madrid, Spain
The UGT headquarters is the main administrative building of Spain's largest trade union, located in the Justicia area of central Madrid. The five-story building features a Neo-Mudéjar facade at the corner of Calle Hortaleza 88 and Calle Pelayo 39, with characteristic windows and ornamental brickwork from the early 20th century.
The building dates from the 1910s and previously functioned as the Convent of Santa Maria Magdalena. After the union's acquisition, it was converted to serve as the hub of Spain's labor movement and continues to house the organization's administrative operations.
The building displays Neo-Mudéjar architectural style, incorporating traditional Spanish design features from the early 20th century. These design elements shape the neighborhood's appearance and connect visitors to that era.
The building sits in an easily walkable area with good transport connections in the heart of Madrid. The location is accessible on foot and served by several metro stations nearby, making it simple to reach.
The building was originally a religious convent before it completely changed purpose and became a symbol of the labor movement. This unexpected transformation reflects the major political and social changes Spain experienced in the 20th century.
