Centro, Historic district in Madrid, Spain
Centro is the historic core of Madrid, comprising six interconnected neighborhoods that together form the heart of the city. Within these areas you will find narrow streets, heritage buildings, major museums, theaters, and public squares that define Madrid's character.
The boundaries of Centro reflect the former walls of Philip IV, which enclosed the original settlement that developed from a 9th-century fortress. Over centuries, this core gradually expanded and transformed into the central Madrid we know today.
Each neighborhood in Centro carries its own identity shaped by the people who live and work there. You will notice how some streets feel bohemian and artistic while others are more residential and traditional.
Centro is best explored on foot since the neighborhoods are compact and well-connected. Early mornings and late afternoons are the quietest times to walk around and take in the surroundings without crowds.
Different parts of Centro maintain their own local celebrations throughout the year that reflect neighborhood traditions. These neighborhood festivals are quieter than major city events but reveal the distinctive character of each area.
