Market of San Miguel, Glass and iron marketplace at Plaza San Miguel, Madrid, Spain
The Market of San Miguel is a food market in Madrid, Spain, housed beneath a construction of glass and iron. The structure displays decorative details along the facades and allows daylight into the interior space.
Alfonso Dubé designed the building, which opened in 1916 as a supply market for the neighborhood. Following a complete renovation, it reopened in 2009 as a gastronomic market.
The name refers to the nearby Basilica of San Miguel, and vendors inside sell regional specialties from across Spain. Visitors often sample products on-site and learn about different culinary traditions from the country.
The market opens daily and is accessible from all sides, including for wheelchair users. Those who prefer a quieter visit should come early in the day or during weekdays.
The metal structure was among the first of its kind in the city when it opened and served as a model for later market halls. Today the building combines historic architecture with modern use as a culinary destination.
