Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos Ciudad de Oviedo, building in Asturias, Spain
The Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos Ciudad de Oviedo is a modern conference center in Oviedo with distinctive architectural design. The building houses a main auditorium with over 2100 seats, 14 separate conference rooms for seminars and workshops, a large exhibition space of approximately 3200 square meters, plus additional facilities including VIP lounge, kitchen, and first aid room.
The building was designed by architect Santiago Calatrava and constructed between 2003 and 2011, replacing the old Carlos Tartiere football stadium on the Buenavista site. Construction involved major technical challenges including safety incidents and delays that significantly exceeded the original budget.
The palace reflects Oviedo's ambition to position itself as a modern city. The building shapes the urban landscape and is perceived by visitors as a distinctive landmark symbolizing the connection between tradition and contemporary design.
The complex is centrally located and easily accessible on foot from the hotel or by public transport from the nearby Llamaquique train station, simplifying arrival. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the building and visitors can use the three-level underground parking garage.
The distinctive shell or bird-wing shape of the building was designed by architect Calatrava and was originally intended to have a moveable roof that could open and close. This technical feature was later disabled for practical reasons but remains a fascinating design element that visitors immediately recognize.
