Francisco Franco

The Francisco Franco monument is a bronze sculpture in Plaza de España, Oviedo, featuring three main figures. The composition displays Neptune riding a dolphin, Apollo gazing toward the sun, and the goddess Hera positioned at the center of the square's structure.

The sculptor Juan de Ávalos created this bronze work in 1977. The monument originally carried a bronze medallion bearing Franco's portrait before it was removed in 2015.

The sculpture incorporates classical mythology through the representations of Neptune, god of the sea, Apollo, god of the sun, and Hera, queen of gods.

The monument sits in a busy central square where multiple main streets converge, making it easy to locate and visit. It serves as a useful reference point when navigating the downtown area.

The project was funded through private donations and contributions from regional institutions. The total cost was substantial, reflecting how important this work was to the community at that time.
