Polvorí de Montjuïc, Military powder storage building in Montjuic hill, Barcelona, Spain.
Polvorí de Montjuïc is a stone storage building on Montjuïc hill with a rectangular form supported by interior columns. External buttresses reinforce the structure and give it additional stability.
The Spanish army built this powder magazine in 1773 as part of fortifications to maintain control over Barcelona after the War of Spanish Succession. The building was then a key part of the city's defense infrastructure.
The building now serves as a performance venue and is home to the Teatro de los Sentidos theater company. Visitors can see how this former military structure has found new purpose as a cultural space.
The building sits on the western side of Montjuïc hill and is in good condition after a complete restoration in 2005. The location is easily reached via pathways across the hill, though the terrain slopes gently upward.
According to local tradition, an underground tunnel supposedly connects the powder magazine directly to Montjuïc Castle at the hilltop. This legend is often mentioned by visitors, though the tunnel's existence has never been fully confirmed.
