Portmán, Coastal locality in Region of Murcia, Spain.
Portmán is a coastal settlement in the Region of Murcia positioned at the base of the Cartagena-La Unión mountain range. The area features two main beaches, Playa de San Bruno and Playa del Lastre, set within a landscape of natural hills including Sancti Spiritu rising to 434 meters.
The settlement was founded in the 1st century by Romans as Portus Magnus and evolved under Arab rule into Burtuman Al-Kabir. By the 13th century, the place was known as Porte Mayn and experienced multiple transformations across different periods.
The locality keeps its Mediterranean character through summer celebrations, including festivals dedicated to St. James the Great on July 25 and the Portman Theatre Festival. These gatherings shape community life and bring together locals and visitors alike.
The area is straightforward to visit for beach activities, with two good options to match different preferences and interests. Late spring through early autumn offers the best conditions, when weather is stable and water conditions are pleasant.
The area experienced significant changes starting in 1957 when mining waste was deposited directly into the Mediterranean, creating new land formations. Today, restoration work continues to address the legacy of this industrial activity.
