Royal Collections Gallery, Museum in Madrid, Spain
The Royal Collections Gallery is an art museum in Madrid housing works and objects from Spain's royal collections displayed across six floors. The building features three main exhibition spaces designed to showcase paintings, sculptures, and decorative pieces from different periods.
Plans for the building began in the 1930s but were halted by Spain's Civil War, remaining incomplete for decades. The museum finally opened in 2023, making the previously private royal collection available to the public.
The collection reflects the tastes and power of Spanish monarchs across centuries, with religious paintings, royal portraits, and precious objects that reveal court life. Walking through the galleries, visitors discover how rulers shaped their surroundings through art and craftsmanship.
The museum has two entry points at Plaza de la Armería and Cuesta de la Vega, both conveniently located. Allow plenty of time to explore since the building spans multiple levels with substantial content to see.
The museum regularly rotates portions of its collection among exhibition spaces, meaning returning visitors encounter different works on each visit. This approach allows the full scope of the royal holdings to be shown without displaying everything at once.
