During the 15th century, this location existed outside the city walls as Plaza de Afuera before urban reorganization transformed it into a central municipal space.
The plaza features structures from multiple architectural periods, with the San Patricio Collegiate Church and Casa del Corregidor representing different design styles.
Several streets of the old town converge at this plaza, including Calle Zapatería, Cava, Santiago, Calle Álamo, and Calle Selgas, making it a central navigation point.
Archaeological excavations beneath the plaza revealed continuous human settlement traces dating back to the Bronze Age, including remains of an Almohad quarter.
