The Church of Saint James features a Latin cross layout with one main nave and two side naves, topped by a central dome.
The construction of the current church structure started in 1745, replacing a fifteenth-century hermitage that existed in the same location.
The church serves as a religious center for the Catholic community in Lorca under the administration of the Diocese of Cartagena.
Following extensive reconstruction work after the 2011 earthquake, the church reopened in 2018 with reinforced structural elements and restored architectural features.
The 2011 earthquake damage led to an innovative reconstruction project that earned the Rafael Manzano Prize for its accurate historical restoration methods.
