Church of Saint James, Baroque church in Lorca, Spain.
The Church of Saint James is a Baroque structure featuring a Latin cross layout with a central nave, two side naves, and a prominent dome at its center. The interior displays characteristic Baroque details with ornate decorative elements arranged throughout the spatial composition.
Construction of the current Baroque church began in 1745, replacing a fifteenth-century hermitage that previously occupied the same site. This new structure transformed the city's architectural character and remained largely unchanged until modern times.
The church serves as a gathering place for Lorca's Catholic community and has shaped the city's religious life for centuries. It remains under the Diocese of Cartagena and continues to draw worshippers who value its spiritual role in local devotion.
The building underwent extensive reconstruction after the 2011 earthquake, with reinforced structural elements integrated throughout, and reopened to visitors in 2018. The church sits in a historic district with narrow cobblestone streets, so plan accordingly and remember that visits should follow standard religious etiquette.
The post-earthquake restoration employed innovative techniques that balanced historical accuracy with modern reinforcement methods. The project earned recognition through the Rafael Manzano Prize and now serves as a model for careful renovation of historic buildings.
