Pozo de los Humos, Waterfall in Arribes del Duero Natural Park, Salamanca, Spain
Pozo de los Humos is a waterfall in the Arribes del Duero Natural Park that drops about 50 meters into the Uces River. The water plunges between Masueco and Pereña de la Ribera, creating a powerful cascade through a rocky canyon.
The natural area was established as a protected zone to preserve the distinctive river landscape and its geological features. The falls themselves have existed for thousands of years as the river carved through the rock formations.
The name comes from the mist that rises when water crashes down, looking like smoke drifting from the rocks below. You can see this effect clearly from either viewing point, especially on humid mornings.
Two hiking trails lead to viewing spots: one from Masueco for close views and another from Pereña for wider perspectives. Wear sturdy shoes as the paths can be muddy and uneven after rain.
A geological fault connects granite with metamorphic rocks, causing an abrupt change in the river's direction at the falls. This underground break in the earth's crust is invisible to the eye but shapes the landscape dramatically.
