Plà i Llevant, Wine region in eastern Mallorca, Spain

Pla i Llevant is a Spanish Denominación de Origen Protegida for wines from 18 municipalities on Mallorca, with vineyards in Felanitx and Manacor at about 100 m above sea level. The soils are clay and limestone over marl and dolomite, red from iron oxide or white from clays and calcium carbonate, with good drainage for deep root penetration.

Romans introduced vines to Mallorca in 121 BC under Quintus Caecilius Metellus Pius, and Pliny the Elder mentioned the island's wines in the 1st century AD. Vines survived Moorish rule despite the Koran's prohibition; when James I conquered the island in 1230, he received top-quality wine as a peace offering. Before phylloxera arrived in the late 19th century, Mallorca had about 27,000 hectares of vines and exported 300,000 hl a year; most vineyards were then replaced by almond trees. The area was classified Vinos de la Tierra in 1991 and upgraded to DO in 2001 with 250 hectares.

The name Pla i Llevant is Catalan for "plain and east coast", matching the vineyards around Felanitx and Manacor. The DO regulation lists native varieties Manto Negro, Callet, Prensal Blanc and Fogoneu alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Chardonnay. Older vines are planted as low bushes (en vaso), newer ones on trellises at 2,500 to 5,000 vines per hectare.

The DO covers 18 municipalities, with the vineyards concentrated around Felanitx and Manacor in central and eastern Mallorca, at about 100 m above sea level. The terrain is low and open, so a car is the practical way to move between towns and estates. Autumn rain arrives mostly as violent storms, and a strong wind blows across the plains in winter.

The name Pla i Llevant means "plain and east coast" in Catalan, and the DO was created in 2001, when 250 hectares were upgraded from Vinos de la Tierra status granted in 1991. Older vines here are planted as low bushes (en vaso), while new plantings use trellises (en espaldera), at 2,500 to 5,000 vines per hectare.
