El Naranjero Dam, stuwmeer in Valencia, Spanje
El Naranjero Dam is a concrete arch-gravity structure built across the Júcar River in Valencia Province. The reservoir stores water over an area of about 125 hectares and provides water for irrigation, household use, and electricity generation in the surrounding region.
Construction of the dam began in the 1980s and it started operating in 1989, marking a major milestone in the region's water management. The project significantly improved water security for farming and homes in the area.
The dam represents how the local community manages water as a vital resource for daily life. Visitors can see how nature and human engineering work together in this landscape to serve the region's needs.
The site is open for visitors and good for walking and picnicking with views of the water and surrounding land. Clear days offer the best views of the dam and water surface, so these are the best times to visit.
Water from the reservoir travels through a 13 kilometer underground tunnel to a power plant in Millares, where it generates 80 megawatts of electricity. This means the dam does double duty, storing water while also producing significant power for the region.
