The water from its natural springs is lightly mineralized, contains carbon dioxide and salts such as bicarbonate and magnesium, and emerges at a temperature of about 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21 degrees Celsius).
The springs were used for their healing properties in the 1800s, and the spa hotel was established in 1867 by a local pharmacist who studied their mineral composition. After a flood damaged it in 1906, Manuel del Rio rebuilt the structure, and it soon attracted visitors from across Spain seeking relief from respiratory and kidney ailments.
