Balneario de Fuente Amargosa, balneario, patrimonio histórico de Andalucía de importancia arquitectónica en Tolox, España

The Balneario de Fuente Amargosa is a spa hotel in the small village of Tolox in Málaga province, nestled within the Sierra de las Nieves mountain range. The water from its natural springs is lightly mineralized, contains carbon dioxide and salts such as bicarbonate and magnesium, and emerges at a temperature of about 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21 degrees Celsius).

The springs were used for their healing properties in the 1800s, and the spa hotel was established in 1867 by a local pharmacist who studied their mineral composition. After a flood damaged it in 1906, Manuel del Rio rebuilt the structure, and it soon attracted visitors from across Spain seeking relief from respiratory and kidney ailments.

The name Fuente Amargosa comes from the sour taste of its water, familiar to locals for many generations. The place remains rooted in the tradition of natural healing, where visitors experience the customs and beliefs about health that have shaped life in this mountain community.

The location is best visited from May through October when the weather is warm and sunny and treatments are fully operational. Wear comfortable clothing, bring suitable footwear, and pack your toiletries; it is also wise to consult with a doctor beforehand if you plan to undergo specific therapies.

The natural carbon dioxide in the springs creates tiny gas bubbles that are inhaled during treatment sessions to reduce inflammation and support respiratory function. This makes the therapy especially effective for those with allergies, asthma, or chronic breathing conditions that conventional remedies have not fully relieved.
