Grutas de Cristal, Natural monument cave in Molinos, Spain
Grutas de Cristal is a cave and natural monument in Teruel Province featuring two main chambers called the Crystal Room and Marine Room. These spaces connect through passages where limestone formations and coral-like structures are displayed throughout.
Speleologists from Barcelona's Puigmal Ski Club discovered the cave system in April 1961 during exploration work. It gained protection status as a Spanish Natural Monument in 2006, recognizing its geological value.
The site serves as a venue for musical performances and poetry readings that take place among the mineral formations throughout the year. This use has transformed the cave into a gathering space where art and nature coexist.
The cave maintains a steady temperature of 12°C (54°F) throughout the year, making a light jacket essential for any visit. Guided tours are available daily and provide the best way to explore the passages and formations safely.
The Crystal Room contains eccentric stalactites that grow in unusual directions, seemingly defying gravity. These odd formations result from particular water flow conditions within the cave system.
