Hospital del Rey

Hospital del Rey, Medieval university building in Burgos, Spain

Hospital del Rey is a medieval university building in Burgos featuring a striking Plateresque entrance known as the Romana door. It now houses the Faculty of Law and the university rectorate for the University of Burgos.

King Alfonso VIII and Queen Eleanor founded this building in 1195 as shelter for pilgrims traveling the Way of Saint James. Over the centuries it evolved from a pilgrim hostel into a significant academic institution.

The wooden doors in the chapel display detailed carvings from the 16th century showing scenes of pilgrims on their journey to Santiago. These works reflect both religious beliefs and the everyday experiences of travelers who once passed through this place.

The building sits at Plaza Sobrado and welcomes visitors, with guided tours available through the tourism office. It helps to check ahead since opening times can vary depending on university activities and events.

One of the interior wooden doors features an unusual medieval carving of a female pilgrim nursing her child while walking the Camino de Santiago. This rare image provides an intimate glimpse into the reality of travelers who journeyed with their families.
