Church of Santa María la Mayor, Morella, Gothic church in Morella, Spain.

Santa María la Mayor is a Gothic church with three naves and three apses supported by robust pillars that carry ribbed vaults overhead. The interior displays the characteristic soaring lines and vertical emphasis typical of the Gothic style.

Construction began in 1265 following Gothic principles and continued for over three centuries until Bishop Gaspar Punter consecrated it in 1593. This extended building process shows how the structure evolved through different periods and influences.

The name reflects the importance of Mary in local faith and marks this as the main church of Morella. Visitors can see how religious art was valued across centuries through the artworks displayed here.

The church is located at Placeta de la Iglesia and offers regular visiting hours with guided tours available through its interior. Plan time to walk through the different areas and observe the architectural details up close.

The choir, built between 1406 and 1426, occupies an unusual location with a spiral staircase featuring relief carvings depicting the birth of Jesus. Few visitors notice these detailed carved scenes that line the steps, showing the craftsmanship invested in this hidden corner.
