Morella Castle, Military fortress on hilltop in Castellón, Spain
Description
Morella Castle is a military fortress on a hilltop in Castellón, Spain, with fourteen towers and six gateways whose walls extend roughly two and a half kilometers around the perimeter. The fortress uses natural rock formations as its foundation and contains several areas including a Governor's Palace and medieval prisons.
History
The fortress has evolved through several civilizations since the third millennium before Christ, with Iberians, Romans, Visigoths, and Arabs each adding their building elements. Each of these civilizations left traces in the architecture that remain visible today.
Culture
The castle incorporates the Governor's Palace and several defensive towers that show how military architecture changed over time. These structures reflect how different rulers expressed their power through stone and walls.
Practical
The climb to the castle is not difficult, but there are stone steps to navigate. Those who are able-bodied should allow time to explore different areas and enjoy the views from above.
