Church of Santa María del Castillo, Buitrago del Lozoya, Gothic Catholic parish church in Buitrago del Lozoya, Spain.
The Church of Santa María del Castillo is a Gothic building with a rectangular layout featuring a single nave that ends in a three-sided polygonal apse supported by three buttresses. The interior displays the typical architectural details of Gothic style from this region.
Construction started in the early 14th century, possibly on the remains of a former mosque, and was finished in 1321. This reflects the religious transitions the town experienced during that period.
This is the only surviving parish church from four that once stood in the town during the 16th century. It shows how important religion was to the community in those times.
The church is easiest to visit as part of exploring the town center, where it is within walking distance. The warmer months are most pleasant for viewing the stone exterior and interior details.
The main altar displays a remarkable 15th-century coffered ceiling that was transferred from the old Hospital of San Salvador. This piece is a rare example of how artworks were moved between buildings in this region.
